The first permanent exhibition of
Péter Korniss in Romania

There have been 45 years now, since Péter Korniss accompanied his ethnologist and choreographer friend, Ferenc Novák at Sic, in Cluj county. On the 25th of August 2012 it was the opening of the permanent exhibition of Péter Korniss at the Dance House in Sic.
Michel van Langveld, a Dutch whose residence is in Sic, had the idea of rebuilding the old dance house, revived now by the photographs taken there at the beginning of the 70s by Péter Korniss, the Pulitzer Prize winner in 2004.
If in 1967 Péter Korniss was impressed by the miracle on the dance house, by the beauty of the popular costumes, by the youth innocence, by the couples wearing yellow hats and red ribbons, by those three musicians standing on the pile of benches, by the diffuse light in the dance house with small windows, …we were impressed by the possibility of traveling back in time in blue house with the hay roof that is now hosting fifteen photos taken by Péter Korniss. These were accomplished back over 40 years ago.
I have often wondered how Péter Korniss understood and expressed so plastically those life sequences from the traditional culture of the transylvanian villages. On the occasion I found the answer. The photographer knew he was the witness of the transition from the traditional to the global culture. He studied this profoundly, kept in touch with the people whom he took photos and made friends with them. He respects and appreciates his characters, he took part at their special life events: baptizing ceremonies, weddings and funerals.
Péter Korniss’ special human qualities proved by a very large number of friends and acquaintances that were close to him at the opening of the exhibition: the inhabitants in Sic, his friends from Budapest and Cluj, Colin Ford -the founder director of the National Media Museum in Bradford-, Mária Sivó -the editor of his albums-, Ferenc Novac -who also gave a speech on the occasion of the opening-.

Se împlinesc anul acesta 45 de ani de la când Péter Korniss l-a insoțit pe prietenul său, etnograful și coregraful Ferenc Novák, la Sic, juedețul Cluj. În 25 august 2012, s-a deschis expoziția permanentă a lui Péter Korniss la Casa de Dansuri din Sic.
Michel van Langveld, un olanadez stabilit la Sic, a avut ideea să reconstruiască vechea casa de dansuri, reînsuflețită acum de fotografiile realizate acolo la începutul anilor șaptezeci de Péter Korniss, câștigătorul premiului Pulitzer în 2004.
Dacă în 1967 Peter Korniss a fost impresionat de miracolul de pe scena de dans, de frumusețea costumelor populare, de inocența tinerilor, de rotirea gravă în dans a perechilor cu pălării galbene și panglici roșii, de cei trei muzicanți cocoțați pe băncile suprapuse de lemn, de lumina difuză din casa de dans cu ferestre mici, noi am fost impresionați de posibilitatea întoarcerii în timp în casa albastră cu acoperiș de paie și bârne de lemn care adăpostește acum cincisprezece fotografii realizate de Péter Korniss. Acestea au fost făcute în urmă cu peste 40 de ani.
M-am întrebat adesea cum de Péter Korniss a înțeles și a exprimat atât de plastic frânturile de viață autentică din cultura tradițională a satelor ardelenești. Cu ocazia deschiderii acestei expoziții am găsit un răspuns. Fotograful a intuit că este martorul trecerii de la cultura tradițională la cea globală, s-a documentat intens, a ținut o legătură persistentă cu oamenii pe care i-a fotografiat și s-a împrietenit cu ei, își respectă și apreciază personajele, a participat alături de ele la evenimentele importante din viața lor: botezuri, nunți, înmormântări.
Calitățile umane deosebite ale lui Péter Korniss sunt relevate de prezența unui număr foarte mare de prieteni și cunoscuți care i-au fost alături la deschiderea expoziției: locuitorii din Sic, cu mic cu mare, prietenii din Budapesta și Cluj, curatorul Colin Ford – fondatorul National Media Museum din Bradford-, Mária Sivó – editorul albumelor sale-, Ferenc Novak, care a și vorbit în deschiderea expoziției.
